DOBIS/LIBIS in the U.S.: an update

Library Systems Newsletter [February 1983]

IBM of Germany recently advised one of its clients on the status of DOBIS/LIBIS in the U.S. and the rest of the world. The information should be sobering for U.S. libraries which are considering the package:

  1. DOBIS
USA-No plans to make new release available
Rest of World-New release in March 1983
  2. LIBIS-Online -
USA-No plans to make new release available
Rest of World-New release in March 1983
  3. LIBIS-Batch
USA-Latest release is 1.0 (no error correction services)
Rest of World-Latest release is 1.1
  4. Serials Control USA-No plans
Rest of World-New IFP in March 1983
  5. Librarians Guide
USA-No plans to publish new edition
Rest of World-New edition available in March 1983
  6. Installation and Operations Guide USA-No plans to publish new edition
Rest of World-New edition available in March 1983

We have previously contended that IBM's library software is not as well supported in the U.S. as in other countries. The pattern documented in this summary is more convincing than the repeated denials issued by IBM in the U.S. Libraries which consider the purchase of library applications software from IBM should get written commitments with regard to future product support.
