Press Release: Ex Libris [June 1999]

Napoli (Italy), June 1999. The Naples Naval University Institute (Istituto Universitario Navale or (I.U.N.) was founded in 1920 as a center of higher education devoted to oceanic studies and to related economic issues, such as marine exploitation and transportation.

Since its establishment, the Institute has been developing research programs to strengthen and enlarge its traditional cultural and scientific interests . At present, it is mainly focused on the relationships between public agencies and private firms, these latter interested in supporting the training activities of the University.

Its Central Library is responsible for building important collections, in order to support the research activities of both internal and external patrons and borrowers. Its collections date back to 1500 and include 33.605 volumes, 250 serials and the "Borbone Collection" from the Royal Naval Library of Naples. The "Borbone Collection" includes about 4.000 volumes on naval and shipbuilding history, published from the 16th to the 20th century.

Dr. Maria Cassella, head librarian at the Institute, says: "We chose ALEPH500 after a thorough survey of the library software market, as the best suited to support the Institute's research activities and library services with modern, up-to-date automation technology."

For those who lost track: ALEPH is now at over 500 sites in 40 countries with more than 17,000 licensed users.
