New and What's Next: current dynamics in academic library management systems, discovery services, and the potential impact of AI

by

Abstract:

  1. New positioning of tech vendors. Since 2012, Ex Libris Alma practically swept the academic library management sphere, with OCLC as its main competition. Beginning in 2019, EBSCO FOLIO earned the position as Alma's most formidable competitor. Though OCLC remains in the mix, Clarivate and EBSCO lead the competition, each offering distinct visions for technology and content.
  2. Beyond consolidation. Mergers and acquisitions consolidated the library tech industry. Large global companies now dominate. What is at stake for libraries as these organizations compete with their respective technology platforms and content ecosystems?
  3. Disruption by open source products: multiple mature open source library systems, including Koha, Evergreen, and FOLIO, present opportunities for libraries to gain rich functionality apart from the commercial ecosystems. Proprietary platforms assert qualities of openness; do libraries gain additional advantages by adopting open source products.
  4. Disruption by generative AI. The rapid emergence of generative AI into the consumer and business sphere brings implications to libraries and their technology providers. Will AI short-circuit longstanding trajectories in the advancement of library management and discovery services? Library tech providers are making their initial forays into this sphere, but will these efforts bring substantial benefits to libraries and their user communities?
