Consolidation in the Library Technology Industry: Recent events and implications for libraries
Abstract: Marshall Breeding will give an overview and interpretation of the business events that have transpired in recent years. He will address some of the ongoing trends and dynamics such as the competing business strategies of ProQuest and EBSCO Information Services, and the status of the other major technology companies offering ILS and related products. Many libraries have also moved toward consolidated technology infrastructure strategies where many organizations join in shared infrastructure for collection management and discovery. Other trends covered include the ongoing interest in open source products and other community-based initiatives. Key questions discussed will include the degree of competition that continues within an increasingly consolidated industry and whether this environment has constrained or enabled the availability of technology products able to help libraries advance their strategic roles.
