The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) is pleased to announce that it has selected the Ex Libris Alma cloud-based library services platform to support I-Share, the resource sharing service and library catalog that serves 91 CARLI member institutions. Ex Libris Alma was selected through a competitive State of Illinois public procurement process.
Alma is a fully vendor-hosted, web-based solution, that will completely replace CARLI's implementations of Ex Libris Voyager and SFX. I-Share libraries may also opt to use Alma to replace any other link resolvers and electronic resource management systems they currently license on their own. Additionally, Ex Libris is including its Primo VE service with Alma. Primo VE provides a discovery interface and a central index of metadata that can be activated to direct users to resources and full-text sources licensed by a library or consortium.
CARLI Senior Director Anne Craig commented, "We look forward to implementing this important service that will further enrich learning and teaching among Illinois' academic institutions, supporting our libraries in significant new ways. CARLI member libraries have taken the next step in cooperation to ensure that the rich and treasured tradition of resource sharing in Illinois will continue to be enhanced and promoted."
I-Share provides participating CARLI member libraries with an online catalog of their own collection as well as a merged, union catalog of the holdings of all I-Share libraries, making possible patron-initiated resource sharing among participating libraries. I-Share also supports library collection management functions including circulation, cataloging, acquisitions, serials control, course reserves, and reporting.
Kristine Hammerstrand, Director of User Services, CARLI, chaired the I-Share Next Task Force, the group that defined the specifications for CARLI's next library services platform and evaluated the responses to a Request for Proposals. She said, "We look forward to Alma helping CARLI extend and expand the resource sharing and collaborative programs that our consortium has offered our members for almost 40 years. I can't thank our I-Share Next Task Force enough. They remained dedicated, focused, and optimistic through a complex, multi-year public procurement process. Their efforts are representative of the kind of collaborative work that continues to make CARLI a successful and thriving library consortium."
