PROVO, Utah, April 28, 2017 — Backstage Library Works (www.bslw.com) is pleased to announce that Laura Folaumahina has been promoted to Operations Manager for Metadata Services. Laura will be working closely with Backstage's sales team and product managers to expand and deliver a full range of services to libraries, archives, and cultural institutions. She will be extending present capabilities, while developing new solutions based on customer feedback.
Laura's service to the library community dates to 1992, the era of mass retrospective card catalog conversion. She has been a part of Backstage since its inception. Repeatedly recognized as a top performer in both production and quality, Laura is an expert in MARC, AACR2, RDA, and subject analysis, as well as project management, workflow optimization, batch processing, and quality control.
During the Library of Congress RDA pilot program, Laura was among a handful of Backstage catalogers chosen to work with the US National Libraries RDA Test Coordinating Committee, creating original records under the new cataloging rules.
Laura has long served as a metadata project manager at Backstage, where she has trained and mentored a generation of catalogers. She has taken the lead in countless projects ranging from card conversion to original cataloging, reclassification, and non-MARC metadata creation.
Laura recounts:
I love my work, supporting libraries in their crucial roles. The world of library metadata is only becoming more complex. The need for metadata continues to expand, and its applications continue to diversify. But I like a challenge. I enjoy problem solving, finding better and more efficient ways to accomplish what our clients need, while still maintaining the quality that they expect from their metadata partners.
John Merrill, president of Backstage, states:
We are excited to add expertise and product knowledge in our Metadata Services department. Our services are growing and evolving. Expansion into non-MARC formats is coming on fast. Laura will be a great help in continuing to provide high quality, cost effective, professional services to help librarians serve their constituencies.
