De Montfort University aims to enhance teaching excellence and student experience with Talis and textbook publishers

Press Release: Talis [November 1, 2016]

Birmingham, UK––De Montfort University have partnered with Talis and five major textbook publishers, including SAGE Publications and Wiley, to embed core textbooks directly into courses, through Talis Aspire, to enhance the student experience.

The pilot project at De Montfort University is delivering core textbooks to more than 2000 first-year students in the current academic year across selected modules. These textbooks will be delivered electronically and embedded directly into courses using the new eTextbooks management capabilities in Talis Aspire.

Commenting on the pilot project, Alan Brine, Head of Archives and Resources Management at De Montfort University said, "De Montfort are delighted to be involved in a pilot to embed core texts across a suite of programme modules. This will enhance the student experience through the provision of textbooks but also ensure it is embedded in their teaching. The subsequent review of textbooks' use and student engagement will provide a valuable resource to support student transitions into and through higher education, thus providing them with the best academic experience."

De Montfort University use Talis Aspire to manage and deliver course learning resources and their official reading lists for their courses. The data from official reading lists, managed using Talis Aspire, are already driving the acquisitions process for library collection. This pilot project will use the latest development by Talis to extend this library workflow to manage, at scale, the delivery of core etextbooks directly from publishers to provision into courses for students.

"SAGE publishing is committed to supporting our academic community by providing them with materials that they want in the formats that best suit their needs.", said Tony Histed, Sales Director, SAGE Publications, "We are delighted to be collaborating with Talis and De Montfort University in this trial to ensure that our next generation of students have access to the highest quality content in the interactive and digital formats they need."

This pilot includes titles from five major textbook publishers delivered electronically using the Talis Player, developed in a technology collaboration with VitalSource. Students can access the resources from their official reading lists online and from their learning management system. This enables students to access their resources, with a single click, at the point of need and embedded deeply in their learning context.

"We help more than 60% of all UK universities manage and seamlessly deliver course learning resources to students through deep integrations with all major library and learning management systems. This creates new opportunities for innovative approaches from publishers, universities and technology providers." said Mark Bush, Head of Commercial Development, Talis, "We are excited about this unique opportunity for publishers and institutions to work together to ensure core etextbooks are embedded for students in the learning context provided by their official course reading lists, all within the learning management system."
