Backstage launches new Cataloging Preparation Service

Press Release: Backstage Library Works [November 20, 2014]

PROVO, Utah, November 20, 2014 – Librarians seeking a cost-effective method of preparing materials for Backstage cataloging have a new service at their disposal: www.bslw.com/catprep. Backstage's metadata and on-site services groups have joined forces to develop a program that provides on-site preparation of items for cataloging and, if desired, physical processing.

The new service allows Backstage to send support staff into the library to prepare materials for cataloging in the most expeditious, cost-effective manner possible. Items can also be packed for transport to Backstage for physical processing. Technicians follow the library's material handling policies as outlined in a project profile. With Backstage's new cataloging preparation service, library staff are freed from hands-on involvement, allowing them more time for library activities and meeting the needs of their patrons.

Nicole Arbuckle, vice president of metadata services for Backstage states:

"Libraries routinely prepare materials for us to catalog, but many encounter significant delays in sending surrogates and other items due to time constraints and pressing demands. Our cataloging and preparation service eliminates the need for libraries to set aside staff time to manage the preparation work, and enables patrons to access the materials sooner. Libraries simply direct us how to prepare the materials on-site and we take over from there. It's a single, easy solution."

Backstage's metadata services group has worked with hundreds of libraries in providing cataloging and physical processing services for many types of materials in dozens of languages. The new service extends the company's reach in cataloging support.
