Launched in December 2002, Science.gov has grown from a portal providing access to 18 sources to becoming the top federal government science search engine, providing access to 59 sources and over 200 million pages of research. To prepare for the tenth anniversary festivities, Deep Web Technologies, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), gave Science.gov a virtual facelift. New features such as result topic visualizations and multimedia searching enhance the search experience. In addition, a Spanish language version, Ciencia.Science.gov, was created to broaden the reach into the Latino scientific communities. Ciencia.Science.gov utilizes a patent-pending technology that translates a user's query from Spanish to English and results from English to Spanish. Dr. Walt Warnick, Director of OSTI, in a 2009 interview said, "OSTI has proved that federated search can make enormous quantities of authoritative, non-Googleable science searchable, which is a feat that cannot be accomplished in any practical way except via federated search. "
"My relationship with OSTI through Science.gov has brought many rich experiences," reminisced Lederman. "The highlight was the Science.gov 2.0 launch in 2004 presided over by then Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham at a ceremony held at DOE headquarters."
