Arab World Institute in Paris chooses VTLS

Press Release: VTLS, Inc. [January 25, 2013]

Blacksburg, VA - VTLS is pleased to announce that the Arab World Institute/Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) in Paris has selected Virtua SaaS and Chamo Discovery for the automation of their libraries. The IMA, located in a distinguished building in the heart of Paris, serves as a museum, library and a research institute. The new system will manage the various components of the Institute including the main library, Médiathèque Jeunesse (Youth Media Library) and museum as well as the Picture Library and Audiovisual Collections. The entire system will be implemented at the VTLS hosting facility and managed by VTLS, freeing the library from day-to-day system tasks. Actual implementation commenced on the 1st of January 2013 with completion and go-live set to take place in two stages in June and September.

"After writing specifications that allowed us to express all of our requirements, a public tender was launched in May 2012," noted Mme Jalila Bouhalfaya, Head of Library Section at the Institut du Monde Arabe. "The contract was awarded to VTLS following a thorough study of their offer. The choice of Virtua by many libraries in the world, especially in Arab countries (Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt, the Tunisia BIRUNI network of academic libraries and the National Library of Morocco as examples) has strengthened our decision to select VTLS. I am particularly pleased that future cooperation with the VTLS team will permit the library to succeed in this re-automation project which is a key step in the overall process of modernization at IMA."

IMA was founded by 22 Arab countries and France over 30 years ago to research and disseminate information about Arab culture and values. IMA collections are mainly in French and Arabic, with other languages also represented. The Institute houses publications of books, exhibition catalogues, magazines and historic reprints about the Arab World. It also contains a sizable collection of precious and rare books. IMA also works in partnership with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the preeminent library and cultural center of the Mediterranean world, for digitizing their collections and making them available on their website. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is also a customer of VTLS, which will help facilitate cooperation.

Jack Bazuzi, Senior Vice President and Director of EMEA Operations said, "VTLS is delighted with the selection by IMA for this ambitious and wide ranging project. It brings together a variety of complex sources and helps expose them through a single interface to the entire world. We are very proud of this new association and look forward to many years of success in supporting the Institute's special needs."
