Drupal and VITAL go live on VOCEDplus

Press Release: VTLS, Inc. [June 7, 2011]

Blacksburg, VA. – The VTLS custom built, Drupal based public interface for VITAL is now live at the Australian National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). This is the last step in the multiphase project, which began in April 2010. NCVER was interested in using Drupal to enhance access possibilities for researchers. VTLS responded by providing Drupal development services in conjunction with the delivery of the VITAL Digital Asset Management System, delivering a complete Drupal-based access portal for VITAL featuring several custom Drupal modules to meet NCVER's specifications.

The vice-chancellor of the University of Canberra, Professor Stephen Parker, along with Dr Tom Karmel, Managing Director, NCVER, recently launched the new database, VOCEDplus, Dr Karmel said VOCEDplus marks a new chapter in the history of VOCED. "Since 1989, VOCED has been the international database for vocational education and training (VET) research. This new and improved product, VOCEDplus, has a broader tertiary education focus and offers its users much greater ability to customise their interaction with the database of over 44,000 records."

Some of the new features of the custom Drupal modules developed by VTLS are:

  • Easy sharing of repository objects by email and through all social networks with an image thumbnail.
  • Displaying QR code images on every object page to allow users to open a mobile friendly version of the object page on their mobile device (a cell phone) just by scanning the code.
  • Generating citations on the fly in the style selected by the user that can be copied, downloaded or sent through email.
  • Enforcing CAPTCHA spam prevention on any forms to be submitted (like contact forms, help, and item requests).
  • Utilizing AJAX (JavaScript technologies) in subtle but effective ways to provide a rich internet experience for users through collapsible meta-tags (like Abstracts and descriptions), pagination and filtration without reloading pages.

VTLS is delighted that researchers around the world can now use the Drupal access portal interface for their scholarly needs. "VTLS made a corporate priority to implement and support Drupal. We felt that this strategy would provide our customers a greater degree of freedom to define and manage the overall experience of their users. NCVER's satisfaction with the results shows the effectiveness of the Drupal based solution and the value of VTLS Drupal Consulting Services. This project has been very beneficial for everybody involved", said Dr. Vinod Chachra President and CEO of VTLS Inc. Brian Rosmaita, Software Engineer/VITAL Technical Lead, shared that "VOCEDplus brings the excitement of the latest social media innovations to an educational context. It makes finding resources easy and fun, and enhances NCVER's mission to provide high-quality information on tertiary education and training to the larger community."

About NCVER: The National Centre for Vocational Education Research collects, manages, analyzes, evaluates and communicates research and statistics about tertiary education and training nationally. VOCEDplus receives funding assistance from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and is endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
