Contra Costa County Library (CA) goes live on LINK+

Press Release: Innovative Interfaces, Inc. [December 10, 2008]

December 10, 2008 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that Contra Costa County Library (CA) has gone live on LINK+, a direct consortial library borrowing system driven by Innovative's INN-Reach solution. Comprised of 48 public and academic libraries in California and Nevada, LINK+ members provide fast discovery and patron-driven requesting of any of over 30 million items from a single online portal. Contra Costa County Library will use INN-Reach in conjunction with their current ILS, Carl.Solution, provided by TLC.

By putting web-based, unmediated requesting in the hands of patrons and reducing the layers of request processing, INN-Reach dramatically reduces the costs and time to fulfill a loan request. The Library now makes any of five million unique titles available to the County's one million residents. "We made the decision to join LINK+ because it is a great resource sharing service, as well as for its efficiency and size," says Cathy Sanford, Deputy County Librarian. "We are accustomed to traditional interlibrary lending with many LINK+ members, but the ease of use without staff mediation is hard to beat. We strive to be an 80% self-service library as a strategic goal. We come to our users and not vice versa, and unmediated borrowing through LINK+ helps us achieve it."

Linda Barbero, Interlibrary Loan Supervisor, is the point-person for the INN-Reach implementation process. "The membership of LINK+ is both academic and public libraries and will present a depth and variety that our users will love. Because all the LINK+ members have the same lending policies, the turnaround time is that much faster."

Barbero continues: "Patrons already ask if we have LINK+ because they use it at other regional libraries. They have had good experiences with it and we are looking forward to being part of this system. Contra Costa County Library will share a monograph collection of about 1.2 million and contribute to the experience of outside users. We are already lending to academic libraries through ILL and expect to be an even larger resource as a LINK+ member."

"It all comes down to expanding the amount of materials available and speeding the turnaround time," says Sanford. "California has a long history of resource sharing and we want to be part of that in a way that helps our customers."

INN-Reach was born out of the need to make resource sharing faster and more cost effective. Traditional interlibrary loan, for example, often meant that patrons would have to wait a week or more to receive an item. Interlibrary loan represented a considerable cost to the library and commercial document delivery options were even more expensive. First launched to run OhioLINK, the INN-Reach family has grown to 24 systems in North America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. The experience of customers over more than a decade and independent research sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries1 give proof positive that INN-Reach is indeed as fast and cost effective as it appeared to be from the start. Across the board, usage of these systems continues to grow, boosting libraries' presence online, and bringing patrons back inside their doors.
