Dorchester County Public Library Joins Maryland Library System

Press Release: Innovative Interfaces, Inc. [January 3, 2008]

January 3, 2008 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that Dorchester County Public Library in Cambridge, Maryland has joined a Millennium-driven union catalog currently serving four Maryland public library organizations. The expanded system covers four contiguous counties in Maryland, with 137,000 registered users and over 500,000 items. Dorchester joins Wicomico Public Library, Eastern Shore Regional Library, Somerset County Library System, and Worcester County Library. In addition to the new Millennium integrated library solution, a majority of the participating organizations will roll out Innovative's integrated Ecommerce and Express Lane self-check products.

All of the libraries are located on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Says Jean Del Sordo, Library Director at Dorchester County Public Library: "We are a rural community with many residents who travel to work and school across county lines, which results in a lot of cross library usage in the Lower Shore area. Since joining with the other libraries and implementing Millennium in August, we have seen an increase in ILL activity. One book can move easily around the region at our customers' request.

Del Sordo continued, "Internet connectivity continues to increase for customers in rural communities and they expect more services from their library catalog. The time had come for us to provide WebPAC Pro because it offers many features such as book images, annotations, book carts, and reserves. Our customers are familiar with these features and want them to be available on their library catalog."

Building on Experience

The host site of the group is Wicomico Public Library. "From being at various libraries as a director, I have developed much respect for the Millennium system," says Library Deputy Director Tom Hehman. "Innovative has maintained a solid reputation over the years for quality products. It had one 15 years ago and still does today. We're pleased that the new system is building on this quality relationship."

Says Vicki Greene, Deputy Director at Wicomico: "Along with building our union catalog, we are launching Innovative's patron-empowerment features. This will add convenience for customers and relieve our libraries from having to worry about set up or tweaking circulation rules." Most of the libraries will install Express Lane self-service circulation on PC workstations and all will go live with Innovative's integrated Ecommerce product.

Dorchester County Public Library has migrated to Millennium from a Dynix system maintained by Sirsi/Dynix.
