Abstract: Effective and ongoing management of reference collections is a vital but often neglected part of reference librarianship. The tedious and endless nature of the reviews conducted in the many libraries leads many librarians to shun this most important task. This article reports a prototype reference collection management system that uses a relational database management program to automate the worst part of the traditional process--shelf reading. Computerization can provide a permanent record of collection management decisions, optimize the time spent on collection management activities, and increase librarians'' comfort level regarding the capability of their collections to provide current and accurate information to their patrons.
