Cleveland Public Library unlocks rich information sources for patrons via WebFeat federated search solution

Press Release: Webfeat [August 11, 2003]

Old Brookville, N.Y., August 11, 2003 - Cleveland Public Library, the third largest research library in America, has implemented the WebFeat Prism system to offer federated search capabilities to its patrons. Library patrons can now simultaneously search any of the library's 120+ databases, online information sources and catalog using One Search, the single, intuitive search interface custom crafted by the library using WebFeat Prism to meet the needs of the community.

Known as the "People's University", Cleveland Public Library offers it patrons one of the largest and most diverse database collections available in any library. Before federated searching was implemented using WebFeat Prism, patrons had to interact with the library's databases through each ones unique interface. The learning curve for patrons was a barrier to accessing the information in these databases. "We offered a tremendous wealth of knowledge to our patrons, but they were required to learn dozens of databases and interfaces," says Andrew A. Venable, Jr., Director of Cleveland Public Library. "The process of navigating our collective knowledge base was a tedious one.

Cleveland Public Library implemented the One Search system, which uses the WebFeat patent-pending federated search engine to transparently allow users to search the library's 120+ existing databases through a single, intuitive interface. The solution includes the WebFeat Usage Tracker, which allows the library to easily track usage statistics, which so far indicate more than half a million searches conducted by patrons since One Search went live earlier this year.

The One Search system is technically elegant, including a number of features unique to the library, such as a remarkable seamless handshake between WebFeat and Cleveland Public Library's proprietary ASP database management application. Used to dynamically generate the library's database menu web pages, the handshake seamlessly augments these pages with the WebFeat Prism federated search capability. The resulting system enables Cleveland Public Library to use their existing application to manage their extensive electronic resource library, while seamlessly integrating WebFeat.

Cleveland Public Library recognizes that information is of no value if it merely exists; it must be accessible, states Todd Miller, Founder and CEO of WebFeat. WebFeat helped put the library's vision for liberating its information within reach. The library's patrons are now getting a better return on the valuable information assets the library has to offer.

"The People's University has moved its knowledge one step closer to its patrons, concludes Venable.
