Emeryville, CA—The company today announced that Jinan University in Guangzhou, China has selected the Millennium integrated library technology platform as part of its strategy for long-term, Web-based service. Innovative's system was judged to be the best match for Jinan's staff who want seamless service for overseas students and who need to deal with both the complexities of Chinese character handling as well as keeping up with evolving technology trends.
Seamless Remote Service
Jinan was impressed by the way all modules of the Millennium system work together to provide outstanding library management, digital solutions, and Web-based access. "We serve a significant number of students outside China and now have the chance to give our international students the most simple access to the resources we have in the Overseas Information Center," says Library Director Li Na Zhu. "The Information Center includes databases, e-documents, images, and educational content such as comprehensive legal information that makes remote access especially important."
The University Library boasts a collection of over a million volumes and over 4,000 periodicals and magazines in Chinese and other languages. Jinan staff identified Millennium as best suited for handling the multi-character environment of the Library. Says Zhu: "Innovative has more experience with CJK and Unicode character support, which is important for searching and retrieving these materials in an electronic environment."
In fact, Innovative has been meeting the need for extensive language support in libraries for nearly ten years all the while supporting initiatives and organizations that promote standardization. To help Web users of the Jinan system, Millennium automatically sends the Unicode character set to Web browsers to ensure that the results are properly displayed. In addition, Millennium also offers the ability to use Unicode values as the standard for the internal storage of character data in the system for proper indexing and display of Chinese-language materials.
Ready to Evolve
"We saw that Innovative was the best company for us because of their knowledge of technology and their presence in so many countries," says Zhu. "This makes them able to take advantage of new technologies and, in turn, makes them available to our library as years go by."
Jinan sees a bright future for the library, which includes a move into a brand-new, 37,000-square-meter facility this year. Says Zhu, "We have an impressive technical team at the Library. They are excited to apply their skills to Millennium, which allows significant customization, to keep the Library on the leading edge of technology."
