INWOOD, WV, June 24, 2005 – Chicago Public Library (CPL) has selected The Library Corporation (TLC) to integrate and install its Next Generation Library System, a project valued at over $13.8 million.
The Next Generation Library System will be built on the CARL.X open technology foundation. CARL.X is the result of a multi-year re-engineering project based on TLC's CARL.Solution, an ILS used by the busiest libraries in the world.
CARL.X offers rich functionality that streamlines staff workflows and opens new dimensions for Search, Discover, Patron Self Service, and Data Mining. It includes a unified Windows Staff Client that manages access to all staff functions and a new Windows Administration Client to manage Dynamic Parameter Maintenance, Operations, Scheduling, and Reports.
The system includes all classic ILS functions (Online Public Access Catalog, Cataloging and Authority Control, Serials Control, Circulation, and Holds), and also includes state-of-the-art search engine technologies from AquaBrowser Library and Endeca Guided Navigation, along with Web-based Collection Development using TLC's unique Online Selection and Acquisitions service. Also included are sophisticated self-service and e-commerce modules.
The system will be deployed on a fully redundant, 99.999% uptime, multi-tiered hardware and software architecture using a combination of UNIX®/Linux technologies and the Oracle Enterprise DBM. The Oracle Enterprise DBM also features sophisticated OLAP data mining and analysis for prediction, forecasting and financial modeling, and provides the underpinning for data sharing applications with other city agencies. The solution also includes a 21 TB Storage Area Network (SAN) to house production, test, training, and warehouse databases, with redundant connections to the City of Chicago's SAN for real-time disaster recovery.
The CPL Next Generation ILS Project also calls for full integration of the ILS business functions (Collection Development, Acquisitions, and Fund Management) with CPL's Shelf.Life, its in-house Intranet product built to manage all staff desktop applications, including Calendar, E-mail, HR, Finance, Web content creation, event management, and other functions. Linking CARL.X and Shelf.Life will provide CPL staff with a common User Interface (UI) for ILS business functions and for all other desktop activities.
The linked products feature a sophisticated permissions hierarchy and will maintain real time reconciliation between internal library business systems and the City of Chicago's Financial Management and Purchasing System. In addition, the system will provide direct data exchange to materials vendors for business-to-business (B2B) applications.
