HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—April 7, 2005—Sirsi Corporation announced today that the eastern seaboard Association of Libraries (esAL) in South Africa, operating under the auspices of the eastern seaboard Association of Tertiary Institutions (esATI), recently selected the Sirsi Unicorn® Library Management System to provide a Comprehensive Integrated Technology Environment to replace their existing Urica systems. A single Unicorn system will provide a merged union catalog to all institutions, while simultaneously supporting disparate circulation and acquisition policies.
The Unicorn system's WorkFlows staff client interface to Cataloging, Authority Control, Circulation, Acquisitions, and Serials Control modules will form the core of the consortium's new Sirsi solution. The Sirsi SmartPort cataloging utility will be used to capture data from Z39.50 sources worldwide. Library users will access the consortium's catalog via the iBistro electronic library. The consortium will also be subscribing to Sirsi's iBistro DataStream service, which provides users with direct access to enriched content, including book reviews, tables of contents, book jacket images, synopses, annotations, and author notes.
esAL's vision statement is: “To develop fully the information resources of the region for the purpose of promoting and supporting teaching, learning and research in the province.” Nicky Muller, chair of the consortium, explained: “Unicorn was chosen because of esAL library members' conviction that Unicorn will be an effective vehicle to achieve this vision. It is esAL's intention to integrate operations as closely as is deemed feasible within the next five years. The flexibility of Unicorn will allow this process to unfold.”
