HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — January 31, 2005 — Sirsi Corporation announced today that the Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) in Washington, D.C., selected Sirsi technology to unite its two libraries and two user groups. The effort is a first-time automation effort, thanks to a grant from the National Library of Medicine. "We have found the technology to be extremely user-friendly and what our end users expect when looking for information and resources," said CNMC's director of library services, Deborah Gilbert. CNMC went live on Sirsi technology in November. "We've been very pleased," continued Gilbert. "We wanted to include resources from both of our libraries in one place for both our students and medical staff, as well as for our patients and their families."
CNMC's suite of Sirsi products and services includes the Unicorn® Library Management System, WorkFlows staff interface, and iLink Online Scholar's Portal. With iLink, CNMC has combined the Medical Library and the Family Library's Health Resource Collection. "The combination of these two collections has proven very effective in encouraging both families and medical personnel to educate themselves and each other," said Gilbert. "For example, if a physician is doing research on a specific illness, iLink will also pull up Family Library materials related to that subject. The physician finds another resource to share with a family in need. Lay materials for parents and other adults in the family can help educate the parent more fully on the nature of a child's illness and may also direct the searcher to a children's book on the topic."
Continued Gilbert, "It helps our staff and students because they are finding books and materials that they can share with their patients. Social workers, nurses, and chaplains can benefit from these materials as well." Some materials include books on grieving and picture books to explain deficits and illnesses. Continued Gilbert, "It's very important that the families have information: information and hope. We are delighted that Sirsi has helped us bring these two libraries together in one easy-to use interface."
