CCC and Innovative partner to streamline copyright compliance for Electronic Reserves

Press Release: Innovative Interfaces, Inc. [January 12, 2005]

Boston, Mass.—Copyright Clearance Center, the world's premier provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions, and Innovative Interfaces, provider of Millennium, the world's leading Java™-based integrated library management system, announced an integration partnership that will make copyright compliance for electronic reserves faster and easier. By providing direct access to Copyright Clearance Center's rights database from the Innovative's electronic course reserves solution, librarians and staff can now fulfill e-reserve requests for copyright permission more efficiently and quickly.

According to a recent study by the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 50 percent of libraries at postsecondary institutions with over 5,000 students use electronic course reserves today. This represents a 67 percent increase in electronic course reserve adoption in just the past two years.

"The integration with Copyright Clearance Center will make it much easier for library staff to search and post materials using Innovative's electronic course reserves," said Jennifer Taxman, Head of Access Services at Dartmouth College. "Like most college libraries, our e-reserve activity is growing steadily and this streamlined solution will save us time in getting copyright permission when necessary."

Previously, librarians and staff members interested in posting electronic reserves needed to leave their library system and log into Copyright Clearance Center's Web site separately. Now, when a user selects a title in Innovative's electronic course reserves, they simply click the “get permission” link and are taken to the appropriate permission service and search results page on User and bibliographic information is automatically transferred to place a copyright permission order, eliminating the need to log in, re-key information or conduct another title search.

“We are in a unique position to partner with Copyright Clearance Center,” said Betsy Graham, vice president of product management at Innovative. “In fact, Millennium is the only ILS that offers integrated copyright permission services from Copyright Clearance Center. Using WebBridge, Innovative's integrated link resolver, makes this possible. No other vendor offers this level of integration.”

“Because more librarians are using e-reserves and seeking copyright permission, we've partnered with Innovative to respond to customer requests for a streamlined, one-stop e-reserve solution,” said Tracey Armstrong, Executive Vice President of Copyright Clearance Center. “Now, when library staff members use the Millennium system to get the content they need, copyright permission is literally only a click away.”

The integration was accomplished through Copyright Clearance Center's Copyright Integration Services. Used by software application vendors, web services providers, course pack providers, and other commercial and academic organizations to integrate copyright permissions into their applications, Copyright Integration Services allow users to obtain copyright permission quickly and easily within their application and workflow. The end result is increased productivity, reduced errors and heightened copyright compliance.
