Dynix Announces First Full-Production Linux Customer

Press Release: Dynix [June 26, 2004]

Abstract: Dynix announced that Sherratt Library at Southern Utah University has successfully launched the first full production version of Horizon 7.3.2 running on Red Hat Linux.

ORLANDO, Fla.-June 26, 2004-Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, today announced that Sherratt Library at Southern Utah University (Cedar City, UT) has successfully launched the first full production version of Horizon 7.3.2 running on Red Hat Linux. This implementation demonstrates the commitment and expertise of Dynix and Southern Utah University to the integration of open source software solutions with current library technologies.

The library's decision to move Horizon to a Linux platform was largely driven by an effort to align all of its systems with Linux and other open source resources. Combining the tremendous Linux knowledge and talents of the university staff with Dynix industry-leading technologies and services, the installation was extremely quick and seamless.

"We moved to Red Hat Linux in search of an operating system that would be easy to maintain, less prone to viruses, and easy to upgrade," said Network Specialist Julie Stevenson. "Very quickly, everything was up and running. The implementation team from Dynix was excellent, and moving Horizon to our Linux platform was problem free."

Stevenson added that the new operating system will run much faster than the library's previous Unix-based system, and that it will require significantly less effort to maintain. "We're excited about the speed and reliability of Red Hat, and we are very pleased with how well Dynix has built Horizon to work on a Linux system," she said.

The new Linux configuration dramatically outperforms the library's previous operating environment, processing backups, updating statistics, and producing notices in a fraction of the time. The new Red Hat Linux OS also creates significant cost efficiencies as well, with an estimated 60 percent savings over other operating environments.

"We're very pleased to have helped Southern Utah University realize its vision of implementing a Linux platform, a move that shows the strength of Horizon as a Linux solution," said Dynix President CEO Jack Blount. "We are excited to have Southern Utah University as a customer, and we share their vision for creating an open source environment in the library. We look forward to working with other academic libraries in moving their Horizon deployments to the Red Hat platform."
