Katrina Anderson, Vice-President of Operations for Ex Libris (USA), announced that Claudia Balby has accepted the role of Manager of Training for Ex Libris (USA) for ALEPH. Dr. Balby began working in Chicago May 10, 2004.
“The addition of Dr. Balby to our U.S. management team provides us with some very exciting opportunities,” remarked Ms. Anderson. “This year, we will offer an array of customized implementation training packages as well as a variety of specialized training seminars and workshops for our existing customers.”
Dr. Balby is transferring to the Chicago office of Ex Libris from São Paulo, Brazil, where she has worked for Ex Libris in a series of increasingly responsible managerial positions since 1996, most recently as Technical Director of Ex Libris' Brazilian office. She has extensive experience with ALEPH, from data conversion and implementation through training and support, and was herself a customer of Ex Libris in a previous position. She has conducted almost 500 hours of ALEPH classes during the course of her career with Ex Libris.
Dr. Balby's academic credentials include Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in library and information science from the Universidade de São Paulo. By virtue of balancing a professional career on the vendor side with an academic career at the Universidade, where she has taught since 1992, she has emerged as a leading authority on library automation in Brazil. Her research focuses on use of online catalogs.
Dr. Balby has lived as an exchange student in Vermont and in 1989 held a research internship as the Mortenson Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has broad experience in the design and assessment of training programs as well as in evaluation and use of instructional technology.
“I admire the rich history of library automation in the United States," said Dr. Balby, "and am a proud witness to the growth of Ex Libris in this country. I am honored to join a talented group of people who are partners to the libraries which make this history."
