PROVO, Utah - January 10, 2004 - Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, announced today that Clinton Essex Franklin Library System (Plattsburgh, NY), has selected to leave its Sirsi DRA system and install the Horizon Information Management System.
The Clinton Essex Franklin Library System (CEFLS) is a non-profit, federated library system serving 30 public libraries, four reading centers, and one bookmobile in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin Counties in Northeastern New York. CEFLS is migrating from DRA to Horizon in order to offer its users a wider variety of advanced services that are found more commonly in larger libraries. After evaluating systems from Dynix, Sirsi, Innovative Interfaces, and Brodart, the consortium made its final decision to move forward with Horizon.
"We want to give our patrons access to a full range of information, and Dynix gives us the tools to do that," said Mary Brown, Director of CEFLS. "Clinton Essex Franklin is a very rural, mountainous area, and our library system has limited financial resources. Horizon will help us level the playing field for our communities, and we'll be able to provide the same quality service that is usually reserved for large city libraries."
During the evaluation process, CEFLS looked for a system that provided flexibility in a consortial environment where each library is independent, and also wanted a user-friendly interface for each module, particularly for circulation functions. Additionally, the system sought powerful patron empowerment features in an attractive Web portal and a viable solution for the libraries' bookmobile.
"Horizon offered us the best balance of usability with functionality. Our staff will be able to access a wider range of reports and have the ability to edit groups of records," said Brown. "Plus, our patrons will enjoy a much more powerful Web-based information portal and will be able to limit their search to their home library or expand it to all the libraries in the system."
CEFLS, which serves of a population of approximately 170,000 people, is slated to go live with Horizon in March 2004. The total annual circulation of automated libraries in the CEFLS system is 230,000 items, increasing to nearly 600,000 when non-automated libraries are included.
