St. Louis-September 8, 2003-Sirsi Corporation, the leader in new name sales of technology to libraries worldwide*, announced today that Drake University, located in Des Moines, Iowa, has selected the Sirsi Rooms(tm) Context Management Solutions, expanding it's current suite of Sirsi products and services. "The Drake curriculum is the center of the library's mission," said Rod Henshaw, dean of the Cowles Library at Drake University. "The library is known for being high-tech and hands-on. And this is where Sirsi fits in: Sirsi Rooms will help us address an emerging phenomenon in our user community - overcoming information overload and finding relevance in the electronic age."
Drake's suite of Sirsi products include the Sirsi Rooms Context Management Solutions, Unicorn® Library Management System, WorkFlows® staff interface, iLink Online Scholar's Portal, and a variety of related technical services. Sirsi Rooms is a revolutionary new way to create and present focused, dynamic electronic collections of the best information available -on any subject, from virtually any source. "I believe Sirsi Rooms will enable Drake to better address the needs of academic end-users who are seeking relevant 'knowledge' from the myriad of resources that are now available," said Henshaw. "By putting 'content in context' using Sirsi Rooms, we will provide access to knowledge defined by quality, relevance, and subject expertise."
Framing resource sites to support the Drake learning experience is a major role for the library faculty and staff. "Sirsi Rooms will give our librarians the ability to electronically develop a relevant context-based collection, just as they do with print resources through traditional means," said Henshaw. "We intend to develop our electronic collection with a core set of Sirsi Rooms that are relevant to the immediate needs of our academic users and continue building additional Rooms collections according to demand. This will allow Drake and our end-users to develop new skills and knowledge bases, fulfilling Drake's outcome-based philosophy of learning."
One program developed by the librarians includes a for-credit information literacy course on using library resources effectively; this earlier partnership has evolved to include the current development of Sirsi Rooms for Drake's end-users. "Sirsi Rooms increases the synergy among librarians and faculty members as they work to develop electronic collections to meet curriculum demands," said Henshaw. "Plus, it is a tool that librarians can use to draw on their expertise - professionals who have a vast knowledge of resources and who understand needs of their end-users."
"The challenges of collecting and presenting relevant resources in today's information-overloaded environment are being met at creative institutions like Drake University," said Andrew Morrice, Sirsi vice president of sales & marketing and international operations. "By empowering librarians with intuitive and transparent technologies, Sirsi Rooms focuses the librarians' expertise in collection development and management into a meaningful virtual arena for easy access."
