Press Release: Dynix [January 24, 2003]

Abstract: Dynix announced that it has teamed with Baker & Taylor to provide users with enriched bibliographic content as they search library resources. The partnership will also deliver an enhanced book acquisition experience for library technical services teams.

PROVO, Utah – January 24, 2003 – Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions and services for libraries, announced today that it has teamed with Baker & Taylor to provide users with enriched bibliographic content as they search library resources. The partnership will also deliver an enhanced book acquisition experience for library technical services teams.

Through this partnership, Dynix customers using the Horizon Information Portal (formerly iPac) will have access to Baker & Taylor's The Content Café, one of the industry's most comprehensive databases of enriched content, including full-text reviews, cover art images, annotations, and tables of contents for book and audiovisual materials. In turn, Dynix will offer The Content Café as one of the enriched content options available to its customers. This partnership will make it easier for libraries to deliver a more dynamic searching experience to their users.

In addition to The Content Café, this strategic partnership will focus on enhancing the workflow from content development creation to purchase order creation in acquisitions. Dynix will team with Baker & Taylor to explore ways to streamline communication between the Horizon Acquisitions module and Baker & Taylor's The Title Source™ II collection development solution.

"There is a great deal of synergy between our two companies – particularly in our goal to enable libraries to provide the types of rich data that today's tech-savvy library users have grown accustomed to," said Pamela Smith, chief marketing officer at Baker & Taylor. "Also, by working in tandem with Dynix, library technical services staff will be able to experience on-going improvement in the communication between our Title Source II service and Horizon Acquisitions, making it much easier to make acquisition and collection management decisions, ultimately helping them reduce their overall workload."

"We recognize the tremendous role that Baker & Taylor plays in the library community. Through this partnership, we can help our library customers be more efficient in their acquisitions, as well as provide their users with enriched content that better matches the items they acquire," said Jack Blount, Dynix president and CEO. "By formalizing our partnership with Baker & Taylor, we're enhancing a library's ability to acquire books and making it more rewarding for a library's users to search on these books with the enriched content."

With bibliographic data on more than 3.5 million book, 147,000 video, and 400,000 music titles, Baker & Taylor's The Title Source II is the industry's largest and most current title database. Its extensive bibliographic database is combined with sophisticated search tools and all the functionality required to turn book lists into orders, making it an ideal solution for librarians charged with collection development.

Through this partnership, Dynix and Baker & Taylor will be working on ways to streamline the connections between title selection done on The Title Source II and acquisition through Horizon Acquisitions. Customers for both products will benefit from stronger ties between the two products, with the long-term goal of reducing the amount of time required to select, acquire, and process books for circulation.
