DigiTool at Leiden University: oldest Dutch University buys youngest Ex Libris product

Press Release: Ex Libris [January 06, 2003]

The Leiden University Library has awarded Ex Libris a contract for the licensing, implementation, and ongoing support of DigiTool, the company’s digital-asset management system. This software provides libraries with all the tools needed for building and managing digital collections as components of an overall digital strategy, including a standards-based, multilingual solution with Unicode support, an interface for seamless parallel searching of all digital multimedia collections, multiple authentication and authorization methodologies, copyright management and access controls, SDI alerts, production of reports and statistics, and more.

DigiTool was first installed at the University of Maryland and, more recently, at Brandeis University, the University of Iowa, and Boston College, all in the United States; and at Curtin University, in Australia. Leiden University, already a user of Ex Libris products—the MetaLib library portal and SFX, the original OpenURL link server—will be the first European licensee of DigiTool.

Dr. A.J.M. Linmans, deputy librarian and head of the evaluation and selection team at Leiden, noted that the signing of the DigiTool contract constituted "another future-oriented step in our ongoing collaboration with our friends at Ex Libris."

Azriel Morag, chairman of Ex Libris, commented, "We are proud that Leiden University has again chosen Ex Libris to address the needs of its ever-expanding library. With DigiTool software, the university will push the limits of the integrated library system and digital-image management to create a new kind of research tool for students and scholars."

Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands, was founded in 1575. Throughout the centuries, many distinguished scholars and scientists, among them Nobel Prize winners such as Albert Einstein, have brought international recognition to this distinguished institution.
