Abstract: Fretwell-Downing Inc. and the Western New York Library Resources Council create New York''s first virtual union catalog with ZPORTAL.

When the Western New York Library Resources Council decided to create a virtual union catalog for its 105 member libraries and library systems, it faced a difficult task. That is, until they discovered Fretwell-Downing. Inc.'s perfect solution: ZPORTAL software.

"Because Fretwell-Downing, Inc.'s ZPORTAL software is so flexible, manageable and easy-to-customize,” explains Gail M. Staines, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Western New York Library Resources Council, 'we were able to successfully go 'live' with WNYLIBRARIES.ORG ahead of schedule. Now we're looking forward to serving as a model virtual union catalog for New York State, other states, and other countries."

The Western New York Library Resources Council includes corporate, hospital, academic, public, school, and nonprofit libraries, each with unique and rich collections. Staines says, "Creating a virtual union catalog was a large challenge for us because we must search across so many different library vendors' platforms, providing information, including shelf-status, in real time. ZPORTAL seamlessly accomplishes all this, fitting our complex needs perfectly."

"Fretwell Downing, Inc.'s willingness to provide a cost-effective solution to our virtual union catalog project has been a major factor in its success,” Staines states. “We've also been impressed by how Fretwell Downing, Inc. took a risk with our organization by being the first to host a virtual union catalog at their Kansas City location. This proved to us they're amenable to working collaboratively with their clients."

In the next few years, the Western New York Library Resources Council plans to implement an electronic interlibrary loan system complementing their virtual union catalog. "We anticipate using Fretwell Downing, Inc.'s VDX software to accomplish this project," says Staines.

The Western New York Library Resources Council is a not-for-profit consortium of libraries and library systems serving six counties in Western New York State. Since 1966, the Council has been dedicated to enhancing access to information, encouraging resource sharing, and promoting library interests for its members.
