Abstract: Contec Data Systems announced the organization of Contec North America, a new division formed to bring advanced automated and digital library systems and services to libraries in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Brett Butler will become Managing Director of Contec North America.

Contec Data Systems, an international company based in Singapore and Christchurch, New Zealand, announced today the organization of Contec North America, a new division formed to bring advanced automated and digital library systems and services to libraries in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Contec NA will distribute the multimedia C2 library system, which provides a unique combination of expert search tools, multilingual navigation, full digital document access and display, and true client server architecture. Contec NA will also assume distribution of the NouSoft OPAL digital library system, including the "electronic course reserves" application which is the only commercial software capable of full digital-library intellectual property management. The NouSoft software will be renamed "C3" as part of the Contec product line. At ALA Midwinter in January, Contec will also announce and demonstrate a unique personal information navigator which will provide library patrons with unparalleled local information management tools.

Brett Butler, previously President of Infour, which had co-developed and marketed the OPAL software, will become Managing Director of Contec North America immediately. Mr. Butler is an industry pioneer who was the founding President of Information Access Corporation. He has broad experience in the library community and in the publishing, and information industries.

"These products represent the new wave, the next generation of library information systems - the ability to integrate traditional library functions, new technology platforms, and true digital library development. This is the most exciting time in library service since the pioneering of OPAC access and the early days of Magazine Index." said Mr. Butler.

Mr. Butler will be joined in the company's sales and marketing effort by Dick Stine and Jon Jeffrey, who have previously been responsible for U.S. sales of OPAL and for international sales of C2 respectively. Mr. Stine has extensive American library marketing experience, including serving as President of Information Design, Inc. Mr. Jeffrey was most recently Vice President, Sales, for Contec New Zealand.

"In addition to providing a truly innovative platform for library service, we plan to offer several new ways for libraries to work with software and information providers" Mr. Stine commented. Contec NA will offer a standard lease-pricing option to ease libraries' addition of C2, C3 or other components to their present suite of OPAC and CD-ROM software. Contec NA also plans a selective program of competitive upgrade credits, and will bundle significant information services in its subscription lease prices.

The Contec NA management team will be strengthened later this year by the addition of experienced professionals responsible for product support and product development. On Dec. 1, Lois Kershner, previously director of Kershner & Associates, will joint Contec NA as Manager, Market Support and Service. She has working experience in public and academic libraries, and an extensive background in automated systems support at the Research Libraries Group and CLSI.

And on Jan. 1, Richard Goodram, previously Deputy Director, San Diego State University Library, will join Contec NA as Manager, Product Quality and Development. He was the principal designer of the pioneering SDSU course reserves system, and has developed innovative library automation applications at Bond University in Australia and elsewhere.

James Koh, Chairman of the Contec Group, said, "We are proud to have assembled a world-class management and product team to introduce C2 and C3 to the North American library market, and to develop and provide these advanced digital and personal library products which we market worldwide."

Contec Data Systems is a private company based in Christchurch, New Zealand with over twenty years' experience in library automation systems and in other software technology industries. The company has over two hundred library clients in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, and other Australsian locations.
