McHenry, IL. May 15, 1995 -- The United States Library of Congress now distributes the brochure Understanding MARC Bibliographic as an official LOC publication. This brochure was originally developed, copyrighted, and distributed by Follett Software Company. The subject of MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloging) is essential to today's automated libraries, and the LOC's circulation of this user-friendly resource allows an even greater number of librarians to benefit from the brochure's information. Follett Software, America's leading provider of microcomputer school library automation software products, is cooperating with the LOC to educate the library audience on the benefits and importance of the MARC standard.

The non-threatening tone of Understanding MARC Bibliographic helps explain MARC cataloging. The brochure describes, in the simplest terms possible, what a MARC record is. Then it provides the basic information needed to understand and evaluate MARC records. Understanding MARC Bibliographic includes many clear examples, and a brief quiz for review purposes. The importance of standardization and quality data are emphasized. Many librarians use the publication as they begin automating and working with MARC.

In conjunction with the Data Base Development Department of Follett Software Company, Betty Fume Vandivier wrote the original edition of Understanding MARC Bibliographic in 1988. The Library of Congress has revised and edited the piece to address such subjects as format integration. More than 120,000 copies of the brochure have circulated to date.

Follett Software offers special MARC workshops building on the material covered in the brochure. Various MARC Workshops are available to benefit all library media specialists, whatever their library automation systems and experience levels.
