In the single site, LAPL has gathered their library catalog, digital photo collection, periodicals, newspapers, subscription databases, library information pages, and web reference pages, all organized for easy navigation.
The LAPL catalog, periodical database, and photographic archives are all accessed via CARLweb in English and Spanish. LAPL will launch the new site with CARLweb 3.0, which displays thumbnail images in the brief records in their photo collection, a feature that's sure to be popular with users of this database. (See Volume II, Issue 1 of @CARL—http://www.carl.org/news/atcarl/atcarl4.html— for more on LAPL's photo collection.)
Home users can access not only the catalog and photo database, but also many of the periodical, newspaper, and other reference sources provided by Gale, Bell & Howell, and others. Through the use of CARL Webcheck (see page 6), remote access users are validated by Internet address, LAPL library card number, and zip code. For databases which are CD-ROM based, a Citrix Winframe Server, maintained by LAPL, allows patrons within the library system access via the web.
