Abstract: This article presents a method for libraries with a limited budget to create a very reliable Web server with existing hardware and with software that is available free via the Internet. The installation of software on a networked 486 or Pentium-based system is described. The software used is the UNIX operating system, the Apache Web server, and Samba, which allows files on a Linux/Unix system to be easily accessed by a Windows 95 computer. One staff member with a good understanding of Unix is needed, but the remaining library staff need not even know the Web server is based on Linux, since they will see it as a normal Windows share.
