Abstract: Dynix announced a strategic partnership with Serials Solutions, a leading provider of e-journal access solutions. Through the partnership, Dynix will launch Horizon Link Resolver, a full-featured, OpenURL link resolver, and offer customers complete MARC records for e-journals.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - November 5, 2003 - Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, announced today a strategic partnership with Serials Solutions, a leading provider of e-journal access solutions. Through the partnership, Dynix will launch Horizon Link Resolver, a full-featured, OpenURL link resolver, and offer customers complete MARC records for e-journals.

Horizon Link Resolver will easily allow library users to connect to full-text articles in e-journals, aggregated full-text databases, secondary databases, and bibliographic record indexes. The product is fully integrated with Horizon Information Portal 3.0, Horizon Consolidated Searching, Horizon 7.3.2, and URSA 3.0.

"We are excited to be working with Dynix in the creation of Horizon Link Resolver," said Serials Solutions President and Co-founder Steve McCracken. "Dynix has a long history of leadership in library technology, and our companies have worked together to create an industry-leading set of products."

Horizon Link Resolver is a link server combined with an ongoing meta-data update service. Leveraging Serials Solutions' technology and e-journal data services, Horizon Link Resolver supports more than 600 databases. The goal of Horizon Link Resolver is to link users as close to the content as possible. In the absence of article-level links, the best available URLs are presented to users.

"As the popularity of online electronic journals increases, so does the need to simplify access to full- text articles when only abstracts or citations are provided. Horizon Link Resolver fully supports the OpenURL standard as a link resolver, providing item-level linking to online resources," said Dynix President and CEO Jack Blount. "We chose to work with Serials Solutions in delivering Horizon Link Resolver because of their accurate data and leading technology."

To set up Horizon Link Resolver, the library tells Serials Solutions what electronic databases it subscribes to. This information goes into the Horizon Link Resolver configuration. Libraries may also populate the link resolver with their catalog information, providing for the rare ability of link resolvers to perform a single search across an entire collection. The ongoing data updating service eliminates the need for librarians to keep a knowledgebase current and removes dead links to journals not in the library's collection.

Horizon Link Resolver provides a clear, intuitive user interface laid out in three simple sections. The first section displays the search criteria, confirming what has been searched for and placing the resultant data in context. The second displays the search results and provides clearly labeled links to all of the content in the library's collection, identifying whether the links are article level, journal level, or database level. The third section provides links to additional full-text resources.

Provided through an ASP-hosted model, Horizon Link Resolver does not require the purchase and maintenance of servers and software, and there is no knowledgebase to populate. New customers can be up and running in under one month.

Dynix will also offer a separate Serials Solutions service called Full MARC Records that provides MARC data for a library's electronic journals. "MARC records are the key that allow libraries to combine their two greatest technology assets: their ILS and their electronic content," Blount said. "Most libraries have well over 50 percent of their journal collection available in electronic format, so it's critical to ensure these journals are included in their catalog, where patrons can find them. In the past, maintaining this data has required too much staff time for most libraries. Now, Full MARC Records makes this possible for all libraries."

The Horizon Link Resolver service includes integrated support from Serials Solutions for electronic journal A-to-Z Title Lists. The same setup used to configure Horizon Link Resolver also sets up the A-to-Z Title Lists and the electronic journal MARC records.
