Blacksburg, VA – The National Library of Malaysia (NLM) and VTLS Inc. celebrated their 25-year partnership at a special anniversary event on November 8, 2013 at the NLM's beautiful 238,000 square foot home in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Dato' Raslin Abu Bakar, Director-General of NLM, and VTLS President & CEO Dr. Vinod Chachra attended the event along with approximately 100 staff from NLM and VTLS Technologies Sdn Bhd (VTLS' Malaysian subsidiary).
The formal event included speeches by invited guests and a multimedia presentation on the history of the long and successful partnership between the two organizations. In his speech, Dato' Raslin Abu Bakar talked about how the partnership transformed the library's operations, and gave it a technology leadership role for all libraries in Malaysia. NLM continues to play this important role today. He thanked VTLS for its cooperation and support throughout the 25 years.
"Our partnership with the National Library of Malaysia is built on mutual respect and trust. Over the years, we have learned a lot from the National Library," said Dr. Chachra in his speech. "This learning experience has helped VTLS build solutions that are better suited for the Malaysian library environment. In a rapidly changing technology atmosphere, where the typical life of software is five years, this kind of customer loyalty is very unusual. It is the best indicator that VTLS has been delivering the right mix of innovative software products and attentive customer service," noted Dr. Chachra. "We are proud of our long relationships with the National Library and with many other customers in Malaysia."
VTLS and NLM have seen many changes over the past quarter century. The library installed VTLS Classic Integrated Library System (ILS) in November 1988, becoming the second VTLS user in Malaysia. At the time, VTLS customized the ILS to support MalMARC format used for the library's records that were originally stored on magnetic tapes. The system included three databases: the public library circulating collections, Malaysiana collection and serials collection. In 1992, the library moved the entire collection to the new and iconic NLM building. NLM upgraded to Virtua ILS in 2003, and has since implemented Chamo Discovery to provide advanced social Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) functions.
