Harvest Bible College has adopted the Koha library management system to provide a combined catalogue for its four Australian campuses. The system is being hosted by CALYX information essentials, who also provided configuration, data conversion and training services to assist Harvest in the transition to Koha.
Prior to the commencement of the project, Harvest operated two library management systems. The main campus at Dandenong in eastern Melbourne, Victoria was using the Alice LMS with 43,000 item records and the Gold Coast, Queensland campus used Destiny LMS with 16,000 records. From both systems, the challenges in data conversion related to the holdings records. Alice does not store a check digit which forms part of the barcode on the physical resource. Calyx has discovered the algorithm by which the check digit is calculated and were able to insert it back into the barcode to be stored in Koha. In Destiny, the presence of sub-sub fields in the holding records required careful scripting to move data to the appropriate fields for Koha. Data conversion was completed on time and on budget. Koha's ‘record matching rule' facility enabled identification of bibliographic records common to the two legacy catalogues.
CALYX also provided integration of a carousel feature into Harvest's Koha OPAC to provide an attractive display of recent acquisitions. This was based on the work of 'electrobrothers' and is being made available for inclusion in a future release of Koha.
