Blacksburg, VA. VTLS is pleased to announce that the Hong Kong Public Libraries, one of the largest public library systems in the world, is now live on Virtua. The public launch of the new Virtua system occurred on December 27, and was announced by the Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs as a New Year's present for the people of Hong Kong. The Virtua implementation includes all of the ILS features of Virtua as well as the Chamo Social OPAC running on Hewlett-Packard hardware configured to support HKPL's 59 million annual circulations and 3.8 million patrons.
"The new system is intuitive and easy to use, offering many new features for our user community," said Lee Yuk-Man, Chairman of the Project Steering Committee for the NGILS project. "We are very pleased with the job VTLS has done in converting our data, implementing Virtua, training our staff, and delivering the customizations we required."
The 21-month implementation of Virtua involved substantial software customization to meet HKPL's operational requirements. In all, 309 specifications required custom development. VTLS produced 148 new design documents and delivered all required customizations, ranging from enhancements to request processing, to supporting circulation using the "Octopus card", a smart card widely used in Hong Kong. The customized software, which will become a part of the base VTLS system, smoothly passed HKPL's rigorous acceptance testing this past fall and more than 1000 HKPL staff received VTLS training.
"VTLS drew on its experience with other large-scale projects to manage the customization process," noted Vinod Chachra, President and CEO of VTLS. "Our team did an outstanding job working with HKPL in designing and implementing the new features that were required." VTLS is an ISO 9001:2008
registered company. The ISO 9001 processes helped in the organization and delivery of this large and complex project. Hewlett-Packard HK SAR Ltd., as the prime contractor, coordinated efforts with several other software providers and performed additional development to integrate the complete solution with Hong Kong's electronic infrastructure.
The Hong Kong Public Libraries are composed of 67 libraries and 10 mobile libraries serving 3.8 million patrons. The library system is one of the world's busiest and registers over 59 million circulations per year. This circulation volume is nearly 3 times that of the Queens Public Library in New York City (also a VTLS customer), which is the largest in the USA. The administrative headquarters and main library are located at the new Central Library, completed in 2001. In addition to library materials, this state-of-the-art facility has an exhibition gallery and a lecture theatre. The library and its branches hold over 12.5 million volumes and special collections.
