29th June 2009. With a vision to connect faculties, students and educators together, Talis has formed a new Education Division that will create ‘joined up’ learning environments and provide seamless access to education resources and pedagogical expertise.
The Education Division will work alongside Talis’ Library and Platform divisions to create next generation technologies that address the whole learning lifecycle. The first product from this new division, Talis Aspire, allows educators to embed scholarly resources (such as e-books and e-journals) with online course packs and reading lists.
Talis Aspire, which is already in use at two major UK HE institutions, exemplifies a new way of approaching old problems, as Chris Clarke (Education Division Programmer Manager) explained: "With the rise of e-content over the last few years, one would expect that student access to learning resources would be easier than ever. However, we found that a myriad of publisher platform, link resolvers and authentication mechanisms was confusing students. So rather than directing students to content, we decided to take the content to students, and allow educators to embed it within their online course packs."
Talis Aspire forms one part of the Education Division’s strategy; future developments will focus on creating large scale repositories of data that support the education process, and initiatives that advance the cause of open education. The Talis Aspire application is built on the Talis Platform, a cloud-based computing service that provides infrastructure for semantic web applications.
