ST. LOUIS, August 31, 2007 - SirsiDynix, the global leader in strategic technology solutions for libraries, announced the beginning of beta testing of SirsiDynix Symphony, the company's new integrated library system. The company also announced the naming convention for the product, with SirsiDynix Symphony 3.2 as the name of its first release.
Approximately 20 customer sites - including different library types, consortia, international sites, and sites running on a range of platforms - are involved in the beta testing of SirsiDynix Symphony 3.2.
The first phase of testing, called the Community Technology Preview, will run for approximately six weeks and will include both SirsiDynix-hosted testing and testing performed by partners on their own test servers. A second phase of beta testing will commence in October. SirsiDynix product management and development staff will use beta customer feedback to make any necessary corrections or small modifications to the product prior to its general release.
"We're very pleased to be on schedule with SirsiDynix Symphony 3.2," said Gary Rautenstrauch, SirsiDynix CEO. "Beta testing is always a critical factor in the success of a new release, and we appreciate the time and attention that our beta partners will contribute to 3.2."
According to Berit Nelson, SirsiDynix vice president of technical product management, "This is the largest and most diverse group of beta testers ever assembled for a SirsiDynix product, perhaps for any library technology product. Our beta partners come from a range of library types and sizes, as well as consortia, international sites, and sites running on many different platforms. Furthermore, because some of our partners have participated in previous SirsiDynix beta test cycles and others have not, we're excited about the mix of perspectives that this group of beta sites will provide. The whole experience will pay off for SirsiDynix Symphony users and developers in the short and long terms."
In selecting a naming convention for SirsiDynix Symphony, the company is building on the current convention for naming releases of SirsiDynix Unicorn, which is currently in its GL3.1 release. "By selecting 3.2 as the name for the first release of SirsiDynix Symphony, we are picking up on an existing approach to naming in an effort to avoid the potential confusion of an entirely new naming scheme," said Nelson.
Rautenstrauch added, "Our goal with SirsiDynix Symphony is to provide our current customers and the library community at large with a solid, high-performance system they can use for their institutions' technology foundation today and into the future. The 3.2 beta process is a critical next step in laying this foundation for the future. We look forward to sharing testing progress with everyone during the coming weeks, as we work toward release of 3.2."
SirsiDynix Symphony is the culmination of Project Rome, which SirsiDynix announced in March 2007 as part of the company's strategy to create a single, holistic library technology platform.
